shareholder: Someone who rents a room or bed in a house as part of a group of renters for the season (a typical season is Memorial Day to Labor Day - some houses run longer).

Shares are sold by number of weekends the house agrees upon. A typical summer share is for 1/2 the summer (1/2 share), which includes every other weekend (usually divided into A & B Groups). Holidays are also divided up into the share groups - e.g. Group A gets Memorial Day & Labor Day weekend, Group B gets July 4th weekend. 1/4 shares will allow for 4 weekends of the summer season and so on.

The Evolution of a
Summer Share House

Phase 1 The Honeymoon -
Everyone wants to do everything together. This usually lasts until the end of June or Fourth of July Weekend, sometimes longer in houses with new groups.

Phase 2 The Chess Game -
People begin to plan their weekends around the arrival/departure of other shareholders. The onset of this Phase can occur earlier in houses with established groups. You know that you are in this Phase when you spend more time at other houses than your own.

Phase 3 The Divorce -
Everyone pretends that they will be sad because they won't be seeing each other EVERY weekend for the next eight months. Meanwhile, everyone is secretly checking other houses for available shares for next year.
