On the OFF chance that you find yourself away from Fire Island - here are some suggestions on how to get through the weekend...
(this was e-mailed to us, and we don't know who to credit)

Summer comes and goes so quickly each year that we thought we'd throw out some different ideas for things to do while the days are long and the nights are warm. (There's a song there somewhere...)

Anyway, we hope that somewhere in this list is something that'll make this summer a memorable one for you.

Search For Treasure
Summer can be a great time for cleaning out basements, attics, cupboards and closets. You might find personal treasures you thought were lost forever or old trinkets and antiques that may return riches.

If you invite the family or friends to join in, the work can become a trip down memory lane. (And you might discover that the greatest treasure is the time spent with family and friends.)

Hold a Garage Sale
We're kind of into a simplify, simplify theme here but a garage sale really isn't that hard to organize: most newspapers offer a Garage Sale 'Kit' in exchange for announcing your sale in their classified section. It's a worthwhile investment as there are plenty of people who plan their weekends around visits to garage sales.

You might be amazed at how much fun you have (and how much money you make). Remember the saying: one person's junk is another person's fortune.

So pick a day, hope for good weather and put your past out to pasture.

Read a Book
The long, warm evenings of summer can give you that extra time for cuddling up with a great book. Whether it's the latest best seller, an old favorite or just something you've been meaning to get to, take a little time for yourself and enjoy a hot day or a warm evening with a good book.

Volunteer
Summer is a busy time in many different ways. Many non-profit organizations and facilities need volunteers in the summer to help with everything from a charity run to a local soccer tournament or escorting kids for a day trip out of the city.

Sure, this tip is about doing more instead of doing less, but this is an activity where everyone really, really wins.

Grow a 'Green Thumb'
Whether your garden is in a yard or a concrete balcony, you can exercise your green thumb and grow something that will last you all year long.

There's no shortage of help: books, TV shows and the staff at your local gardening center can give great ideas and plenty of advice.

Growing your own plants, whether for decoration or for eating, is wonderfully satisfying. Plus it's fun to dig in the dirt.

Go Camping
Camping has changed: it can be as basic or as elegant as you want. Even the most basic of camp sites now offer electrical hook ups, running water and indoor plumbing.

But whether the night is spent in a tent, a trailer or a cabin, the same joys are there: clear starry nights, clean air, wonderful new smells and the simple fact that, for some reason, food just tastes better when it's cooked and eaten outside.

Be a Local Tourist
When was the last time you explored what your own town has to offer?

You can start with what's most popular for the out-of-town visitors: the museums, galleries and exhibits. And your local newspaper's lifestyle section will help you find more sites awaiting your exploration. History, adventure and fun are right outside your front door.

Have a Picnic
And when was the last time you had a picnic? And we mean a real picnic with a basket of food (barbequing's just not the same), a blanket and, OK, maybe some ant repellent.

Take family, friends or a special someone and escape for a summer afternoon or evening at the park, the beach or somewhere out of town and away from it all.

Stretch out that plaid blanket, open the wicker basket and enjoy those delicious goodies you've brought. Bon Appetit!

Pick Fruit
Is there anyone who doesn't like fruit?

For healthy eating, fruit is the perfect choice. And getting your fruit fresh 'off the vine' is even better.

Most towns and cities have a 'Pick Your Own' kind of place, a farm or an orchard perfect for loading up on fresh, delicious strawberries, peaches or apples.

And whether you turn your pickings into jam or pies or just eat it raw, picking fresh fruit is a real summer-only kind of thing to do.

Watch a Sunset
Have you ever watched, and we mean truly watched, a sunset? As the sun goes down over the horizon, things change: the color of the sky, the sound of the birds in the trees and the shapes of the clouds all add to the delightful experience.

Whether in the country or in the city, a sunset is truly nature's glory at its best.

Watch a Sunrise
But where will you be when dawn breaks? We know the comfort of your warm bed is hard to give up, but watching the sun come up has the potential to change your perspective on life!

Yes, it's true that the sun comes up later in the winter, but there's something about a summer sunrise: whether you're out in the country or in the city, you're watching the world wake up.

Last But Not Least: Get Outside!
Whatever you do this summer, do at least some of it outside.

We know that different people like to do different things (as we tell our own children). But the thing that makes summer special is that you can do the things you like to do with no more protection than a hat, some sunscreen and maybe some bug spray.

We're not anti-winter, but think of it this way: the worst day of summer is gentler than the best winter day. Even in a rainstorm you can run outside and get soaked, knowing that your health risks are limited to a head cold and pneumonia, instead of hypothermia.

So we hope that whatever it is that you like to do, you'll make the time to do it outside.

Have a safe and happy summer.
